It happened again just now. A silver pest control truck slowed down and a silver haired mustachioed man said, “THAT is a beautiful dog.” I said, “Thank you” with a smile and he drove on. I turned to Blue, standing beside me in the driveway, and told him he is handsome. Traffic stopping handsome even. He’s a sweet one too. My faithful canine companion. Woof.

A nice experience, Janean; I love the love expressed in your post. So many think that animals have no capacity to experience human emotions, not realizing that animals are people that can’t talk.
Thanks for reading and feeling the moment with me, dW. I smiled at your summary, “So many think that animals have no capacity to experience human emotions, not realizing that animals are people that can’t talk.” I believe that animals have souls, feelings and emotions every bit as much as people do. My Blue dog has empathy and compassion. He circles close to offer comfort and also winds himself up with zany antics that make me smile and laugh even on my most weary days. We brought him home as a three month old pup in January of 2012 and I’ve written several books about our adventures here. So often during Mike’s cancer fight I couldn’t write about all the medical logistics and personal challenges we were facing, but I could write a silly story poem about something Blue did. Whimsy, imagination, art and writing were my soul balm creative outlets during that time.
