the thirsty cat

the thirsty cat
with stripes on her back
woke from a nap
and stretched
yet didn't hop down
and walk around
to where her bowl
was waiting

the thirsty cat
with stripes on her back
spied just the thing
to whet her feline whistle
she dipped a paw
in a nearby glass
that was abandoned
by the boy she favors

the thirsty cat
with stripes on her back
dipped her white paw
from water to mouth
and back again
'til she realized
her muzzle
fit just fine
so she bent her head
and drank her fill
'til the water level
lowered

the thirsty cat
with stripes on her back
content as could be
sits upright
thirst nearly sated
she swoops her paw
for a few more sips
before she goes back
to napping
the thirsty cat
did just that
earlier today

Watching our tabby cat, Snuggles, drink from my youngest son's water glass this morning, I was reminded of Aesop's Fable, "The Crow and the Pitcher". Wikipedia summarizes this fable by saying, "A thirsty crow comes upon a pitcher with water at the bottom, beyond the reach of its beak. After failing to push over the pitcher, it drops in pebbles, one by one, until the water rises to the top of the pitcher, allowing the crow to drink."

I needed a grin, so I wrote this little poem about my kitty cat, Miss Snuggles. She's a fine feline and one I think you'd like as well. She's a good lap warmer and a good friend. To A.T.B. and I especially. It's true we're her favorites, though my husband is running neck and neck with us as he's been more restful in recuperation. We can tell she'd love to be a barn cat, not a house cat, so she can prowl and mouse and use all of her claws. She wants to climb trees and play with the children outside and chase rabbits, squirrels and birds as well. Her tail flicks from side to side as she watches them play outdoors. Alas, she's a house cat. Our cat. We are her people.

  2. "Kathryn writes: It also sounds like the start of a fun little picture book!"Thank you, Kathryn! You're the second person to suggest just that. I am listening and thinking along those lines for Someday. Not sure when that'll day will be at this time. This is the note I included when I e-mailed "the thirsty cat" to my grandfather, who is one week away from turning 96. That's right, I said I e-mailed it to him. How cool is that?! I think I'll tuck it into the note at the bottom of the poem as well:I needed a grin, so I wrote this little poem about my kitty cat, Miss Snuggles. 3. Cats are the most entertaining of pets. One of my kids told me once, "We don't need a TV. We have cats."I, too, have found myself watching the antics of Evelyn and Tiki rather than attending to the more serious side of life. This morning, both my girls waited for me to come out of the bathroom and head down the stairs to make coffe and to feed the hungry feline crew. Evelyn, who is an old lady cat, had a kitten flashback and ran as fast as she could down the steps in front of me, stopped to claw the carpet at high speed for about a second and then run into the kitchen to waiting by her food bowl. She does this every morning, but normally she will just trot down the stairs, impatiently scratch her scratching post while I come down the steps (as if she is teling me, Hurry up with the food nd don't forget, I have these keenly sharp claws) and then wait by her food bowl, nicely calling for food in her tiny kitty voice that is barely in human hearing range. Tiki, on the other hand, is a comparative youngster. She is six and Evelyn is almost 14. Tiki is a BIG female Siamese cat. She has a loud "gravelly" voice that sounds like she has smoked three packs of unfiltered Lucky Strikes everyday for the past thirty years. And the thing is, No one smokes inside my apartment. Ever. For any reason.Karen

  4. Oh, Karen, I'm going to risk sounding like my Grandma Murray as I exclaim, "How delightful!" at your feline filled frolicking this morning. I can't imagine Life Without Cats. They add so much fun, smiles and love to our lives, along with the occasional fur ball. I love your description of their varying voices as well. I can picture the whole thing from your skillful narration. Thank you so much for sharing this snippet of Life In Your Apartment with me today. No smoking here either. Unless it's me, and the smoke is comin' out of my ears, which thankfully doesn't happen too often. My cat with the stripes on her back is once again napping near where I'm plugged in writing. (Because that sounds so much better than saying, "Where I'm goofing off online instead of doing the laundry, dishes, grocery shopping and mopping." *sigh*) ~ Janean

  5. I love cats! We had a cat when I was young. There are pictures of me with her on my lap when we were about the same size. 🙂 And yeah, she was just as sweet and funny as Snuggles. :)I still prefer cats above dogs, though I have a dog now. So it'll be a while till I have a cat again. Our do loves cats too – she thinks they're yummy. :PAs for Aesops fables, did I show you the two goats on the bridge fable come true here in Thailand?

I love cats too, especially this one. I often take pictures of her with my youngest son, as they have a special bond. I grew up with cats and have a picture of one as big as me in my baby book too.

My husband is campaigning for a dog. They are easy to love but require more day to day care. I'm a little jumpy about the prospect not having much previous Dog Experience. We think Snuggles will hold her own just fine. She has all her claws if Who's The Boss becomes an issue between the household pets.

I haven't seen that picture, Ben, of the two goats on the bridge. I also have to admit, that fable of Aesop's isn't as familiar to me as The Crow and the Pitcher. Would love to learn more though. Always.

Thank you for coming to visit today. I know you've been staying closer to home in recent weeks. I thought of you when I posted this, since it fell into the lighter fare I promised was to come. There is one about doughnuts and the one woman zoo too. 🙂

Ah… Aight, in short: Two goats, on either side of the river, decide to cross over a narrow bridge. They meet in the middle, and neither refuses to back down to let the other pass first. Well, how the story ends, check here. It's cats though, not goats. I love cats, and I laughed out loud at this. Don't worry, it's certainly not human cruelty. You should know me enough by now that I never laugh at that.Originally posted by jbaird:

I'm looking forward to the time to read it. I certainly will, and many thanks for the lighter fare! 😀 Don't feel compelled to post lighter stuff for me; post where your heart's at. I'll read it nonetheless. Despite the flooding all around, school's crazy busy though. 90% attendance, and an end-of term performance to prepare…

  8. Ben, Thank you for the synopsis of the fable about the goats. I DID see the cat video when you initially posted it but enjoyed watching it again. A good lesson for me, for those times I did my heels in and refuse to budge. Somewhere I have an oversized worn copy of Aesop's fables that was yellowed and cracking in the days of my childhood. I should look for that book and revisit the wisdom shared through the antics of animals with human traits.Originally posted by bentrein:

Honestly, I needed the lighter stuff. That's where my heart is. Feeling too heavy these days and needing some levity wherever I can find it. Funny thing is, my silly kitty repeated her paw drinking performance after my children were tucked in bed. It was a larger opaque cup this time, though thankfully still water. Glad attendance is good, flood and all. It must mean the roads are still accessible in your immediate areas. Good luck with your end of term paperwork. Some things are the same for teachers everywhere. I can still see my dad workin' on grades at the kitchen table. We learned fast to give him wide berth so he could concentrate and get it done.~ Janean

Smiling at the beautiful blue flower you sent and will definitely pass on your loves to my sweet kitty, Snuggles. She came with that name when we adopted her and it suits her perfectly. She is a Snuggle Bug. I grew up with kitties. Sometimes more than one. There has been some Talk Of Getting A Dog, but so far no canines reside here. ~ Janean

My husband keeps telling me dogs can be good companions in ways that cats choose not to be. We shall see. My sweet kitty is sleeping next to me on the couch at this very moment. She also sleeps on top of me at night and purrs. My youngest son wrote this poem for her last spring. He's using this picture he took of her in his Animal Notebook for third grade as one of his five mammals.

We think she'd prefer to have a dog as a companion, rather than another cat, if we do expand our household. Snuggles has all of her claws, so we figure she'll hold her own just fine if/when that day comes. ~ Janean

Depends what kind of dog you get… I know this joke…

Teacher tells the class that the Human is the only animal that stutters. Johnny raises his hand, and disagrees with the teacher."Well Johnny, why do you say that?""Well Miss, we had this cat at home. And one day, the neighbour's pittbull jumped the fence. The cat went FFFFF….. FFFFFF….. FFFFF but couldn't finish saying FLOOD OFF before the dog got her."

    So get a chihuahua or something… 😀

Oh, Ben! I love it! And how I needed the grin and laugh this morning! Thank you! The Dog my husband has always wanted, and that my children are on board with, me too if it's happening, might as well Join Them, is a German Shepherd. A friend of mine has one and I love her, the friend AND her dog. Her dog wooed me with her excitement at seeing me and cuddles as we watched a movie. So, we shall see. Not Yet is the Official Word. As to your suggestion of a Chihuahua, I shall answer with an emphatic, NO!!!!! Honestly, I have no use for this breed of dog. My oldest son thinks it's hilarious to hear me say, "Why would I want a dog that my cat could beat up?" And she so could too. Snuggles is One Awesome Cat. If I do say so myself. =^.^=~ Janean

German Shepherds are great dogs. Just one bit of advice – when getting any dog – get them young, and train them well; yourself. Untrained dogs are a menace to pretty much everything around them. And German Shepherds are strong… And smart; they're usually very easy to train. That's one advantage of cats; you can't, so don't have to train them. :DI agree with you on the no to a Chihuahua – it'd fit in my shoe, and it'd fall asleep there. That would be a bloody mess -literally – when I'd be heading out to work in the morning. 😦

This is the same conclusion we arrived at. Initially, we were looking to adopt a young dog from the shelter, but the more we thought about it, the more we wanted all of her experiences to be with us. We even have a book on trainin' shepherds on loan from an officer my husband works with. Gettin' our ducks, or should I say dogs, in a row and gettin' ready when The Day comes.Originally posted by bentrein:

I do love cats for this very reason. We are her people much more than she is our cat. She's perturbed with us still today because yesterday, on Thanksgiving, A Dog came to visit AND she was shut in the basement while we ate our turkey. Selfish us, wanting to keep her away from the turkey sittin' on the counter while we ate our meal one room away without the benefit of x-ray vision to see through the wall and shoo her had she gotten up on the counter. It's not often we separate her from us but I'd do it all over again just like that. And will, next time turkey is in the menu.Originally posted by bentrein:

I absolutely LOVE that movie, Ben! Especially the part where they are soaring above the pink hued clouds. It's been too long since I've seen it. May have to remedy that tomorrow. And I think you're right, the movements, stretches, and nuances of behavior are very cat like. 🙂 ~ Janean

And? Did that work out? Kevin wanted to watch it today as soon as he was out of bed. I didn't let him; TV is for the evening… 😀

  25. Not yet. Though I did go to the theater with my two handsome sons and see the movie, "Arthur Christmas" on The Big Screen. We rarely do that so it was extra fun and special. Then we got groceries, came home for supper and left home again to select our Christmas tree. Other than the movie I don't think I watched TV yesterday. My recuperating husband has had a Monopoly on The Good One and that's A OK with me. Just glad he's home. 🙂

Hooray for A Good Weekend and Time With Family! Church was part of our Sunday here too. My oldest son is 11 and younger son is 8. They are both Super Great, just ask their Mom. 🙂 The second Monopoly game was shut down this afternoon in a sea of frustrated, "You cheated!" tears. It was to be expected, as I/we knew their getting along so well couldn't last much longer. It's Just The Way Things Are. They made it longer than expected though and that is A Wonderful Thing.

I enjoyed reading your note to Ben too. It's a battle to limit our children's electronics in every country/culture from the sound of your note. (The parents too…) Your son sounds active and healthy and like he keeps you hopping from activity to activity. Yes, have a great week yourself!

Yes, Ben, I DO understand your question. I was referring to The Good TV, The Coolest, Newest, Biggest, Best TV In The House, when I wrote that sentence. It's the TV in front of the La-Z-Boy recliner, near the fireplace, in The Family Room. By the time he gives up his Recuperating Spot and says, "Here's the remote. You can watch whatever you want to watch." I am so tired I either fall asleep trying to watch a TV show in the family room or just go to bed myself. Though, "The Good One", WOULD be a good name for a TV show. It sort of cuts through all the Marketing Crap and just says, "Watch me. I am The Best Thing On." In TV show terms, it makes me think of a family with several children and how everyone thinks one of them is The Good One, but they are all wrong for the darkness and secret life he/she leads. Hmmmmm, time to call Hollywood do you think? Or has it already been done? I wouldn't know. I'm clueless about TV shows these days. I keep fallin' asleep too soon. ~ Janean

great Zenaida, I love the image of you on Opera as you prepare breakfast for your children. I do the same thing! Or rather I type comments, as they say from the other room "Mom, I'm HUNGRY". They could get it themselves, and sometimes they do, but it's a little thing I'm glad to do that helps our morning routine go more smoothly, especially on school days. Aaaahhhh… Sorry for misunderstanding. It's my inability to comprehend the appeal of TV. I use my TV for my computer; the Good One that is. We have a Bad One for my wife to watch some screaming ladies shows (also known as Thai Soap Operas). On occasion I do watch downloaded TV shows on The Good One, but only what I choose and what's been proven to be good without ads… 🙂 Mostly movies and/or writing though.

I watch so much less television than I used to. I was once a soap opera watcher myself, I admit it. It was a nice way to unwind after a day at work, or in the middle of the day when I was in college. I much prefer downloaded television myself to avoid commercials. If I have to have them mixed in with my show I prefer to be able to fast forward past them. Mad Men on AMC about an ad agency in the 60's is one of my favorites. My husband thinks it's a snooze fest but I don't care. I can watch it on the smallish, but still works and I'm thankful for it TV.

I've watched House a time or two. It is well done and I like the suspense of, "Will they figure out the medical mystery before the patient expires?" I didn't follow Heros beyond the pilot episode. It was all too brief a series from the following it garnered though. It IS nice to hang out together! Good man, Ben, to do just that. I do enjoy the dry, subtle, and not so subtle humor of House. I just haven't been a regular viewer. I also fold clothes during TV time. Ironing, well, not so much. I love the NCIS humor. The banter between co-workers, pranks and personalities are so well done. Not every show gets it right, or has it feeling as natural and real as that ensemble cast does. Kudos to them. I had a black and white turn dial TV in my college dorm room. It was free from the neighbor across the street who wished us, "Happy Easter" all year long, except on Easter Sunday. Then he said, "Merry Christmas" or some such thing.

Yes, Ben, you did mention the vacuum a room thing. Made me grin. They'd be all in each others way and trying to tell each other the best way to do it, quoting movie scenes with vacuuming and looking up online what vacuum cleaner model would do the best job and how to extract forensic evidence from said vacuum when needed. I can see it now…

I find your narrative beautiful, meaningful and out reaching. You inspire me on a number of fronts, the first you know about because I told you what that is since the time we first met. But now I also tell you I find inspiration in yourt writing…. and when I am inspired by someone like you, I can, in my own manner reflect this in my own creative expression. Your gift has consequences. All positive ones. Thanks for this

  42. Thank you, John. For your kind words. I am beginning to feel like a Writer with a capital W. Though I may be quieter in Opera Land for awhile. I have some art to make and things to do. I"ll drift back this way when I can. As much fun as it is to read what other write and engage in witty repartee in infinite comment, I shall learn to be quieter. Even if it's not very bloggerific of me. My best to you. Keep writing. The world needs your voice and your poetry. ~ Janean

  43. Thanks Janean, I hope you will not go away. It's my own fault that I was tardy in matching the wit and banter ypu shared with others and I wish I had been in with all of that, of course, but my Time Machine is still a W.I.P. and I can't go back to contribute, so my wish remains a wistful one.You don't have to learn to be quieter, Janean. You are, I trust and hope, true to yourself, and your natural side and personality will out as this is part of who you are. I love the energy that comes out of all your writing and your comments. You are enthused in all your contributions and that's bloggerific of you. In your gracious words to me – thank you very much – at your end sentence it seemed you hint at not being here in Opera. I know you will have to focus, get back on track, if that's the right description but I do hope you are not 'standing back' from your blog or my blog or disengaging from comments. Believe me when I tell you that I would miss you so very much, miss all that you write about, miss you as a person and my great friend, if you should become 'quieter' or 'distant' or 'absent' in any way. Janean… your tribute to me is profound.. and now I reflect it back at you as my tribute. You write in the moment. You capture the now. You are a remarkable poet. You will be published. And when that happens I will buy your book of poetry. It will be treasured by me, word by word, as I read it and know that I have your friendshipand, along with others, have been privileged to have seen your beautiful creative writing in your blog, here and now. Thanks for everything.

  44. John, I don't know whether to say, "Thank you" or, "You're welcome", so I will say both. I've always been a chatterbox. Since I was a child. At least when I write my mouth isn't moving. Though I can still simultaneously "step in it" and put my foot in my mouth which tastes like sh*t. I am not feeling very bloggerific today, I am a grouchy, surly mess. I love to write. I love it. It sets me free. It feels so good To Just Say It. A book IS a dream of mine. More than one, as any author/Writer worth his/her salt would dream for. We shall see. Believe me I'll shout about it from all over when that day comes. Thank you for being a pre-sold copy. Right behind my mother, sister and aunt, three of my other champions who keep encouraging me to Keep Going and not stop. That I'm on to something. Have a lovely rest of the day there. Our day is beginning here. ~ Janean

*smiling as I savor your words*Thanks Janean… have a lovely rest of the day. My day here, a bloggerific skip and a jump across the pond that unites us, is ending.

I don't feel it that way. It's not a monogamous love affair we're trying to establish. Janean has already met the love of her life. Friends we can have many, and I certainly do not feel threatened – or in competition with anyone.Originally posted by lokutus-prime:

A writer and an artist! Forgive me; a Writer and an Artist. I haven't seen the art work yet, but if you put as much perfection in that, as your writing, the A is already deserved… Would love to see some of it when it's done!

I do remember that, Ben. I can't quite believe this little cat poem has over 50 comments as I reply to you and John tonight. WOW! This is my Most Commented On blog post. Snuggles is famous, but she's obliviously napping the night away. Originally posted by bentrein:

Enjoy your long break from teaching. Nice you can unplug to savor the family time as 2011 changes to 2012. Originally posted by lokutus-prime:

I posted pictures of a few pieces of my older in an artwork album here at Opera. I started telling my art story this spring as well in, "When Art Calls You Home (Part 1)". http://my.opera.com/jbaird/blog/2011/05/18/when-art-calls-you-home-part-1There is a pink rooster drawing shared in the post, titled what else, "The Pink Rooster"http://my.opera.com/jbaird/blog/2011/10/19/the-pink-roosterThank you for your encouragement. I have been asked to display some artwork in a local store in a few days time and I said, "Yes!" even though I haven't made said artwork yet. Better go get started as it needs to be framed tomorrow… ~ Janean

Thursday ended better than it started. A Good Thing. "Bloggerific"…what was I thinking as I made up this word the other day?! Is it vain of me if I admit I rather like it, my made up word? ~ Janean

I have, I am, though a blog-post is brewing… I know very little to reply to your lengthy comment; other than that – you're welcome, our compliments… (sorry, I should speak for myself, but I'm sure John will concur) My compliments were honest, not mere flattery.Originally posted by jbaird:

I saw the notification pop up on twitter. Will check it out soon… I know THAT feeling quite well, when words just have to be written, because they are there, waiting.Originally posted by bentrein:

I didn't create the plaque, or originate the phrase, "Always color outside the lines", but it felt right to post it in the artwork album. Some of what's there is art by my two sons. I used their self portraits to illustrate the poems I wrote for, and about, them in the spring. he gets it from me (T.J.B.)http://my.opera.com/jbaird/blog/2011/05/23/he-gets-it-from-me-t-j-bhe gets it from you (A.T.B.)http://my.opera.com/jbaird/blog/2011/05/23/he-gets-it-from-you-a-t-bPerhaps you'll read the longer story someday. The post is here to stay, just hanging out at Opera for whomever stumbles upon it. Still vacationing on School Break I presume.~ Janean
