This morning’s sunrise gave the illusion of warm in shades of gold and orange. I checked my weather app AFTER stepping back inside from walking Blue. Weather status at 7:30am, “-1*F here, feels like -23*F.” The really crazy thing is being out with Blue this morning, it didn’t feel THAT cold. Dogs paws didn’t hurt. He walked on all four around the mini block. I checked the temp again just now and it’s “warmed up” to zero and feels like -23*F. Indoors is best. Thankful for heat and money to pay the bill when it comes due. My boys of course are thankful for sleeping in, no school and another day at home. Blue has since fallen back asleep. Dog is love seat zzzz’ing in his favorite spot. The house is momentarily quiet, even with all of us home on a Monday. Good morning.

9:33am, and my youngest son just woke up

first quiet stillness
on a moonlit morn
and then…
THIS
lavender sky
clouds lit orange
from below
as the sun rises
along the horizon
looking out
o’er my backyard
intensity of color fading
softer now
as the sky brightens
so fleeting
it’d be easy to miss it
glad I didn’t
though this time
my feet are in socks
I’m warm indoors
leaning on the doorjamb
opening the sliding glass door
just enough to take photos
*snap*
using my feet to block the dog
who is curious
like a cat
my turquoise wind chimes
catch the wind
such a melodious sound
the sky is bright
the sun is awake
it is officially morning
breakfast and coffee await

I love that patch of blue
“Clear skies ahead”
as the sun sets
and a brisk wind blows
with January’s chill
standing on my front porch
the sky is changing still
more glowing color
shades of orange and gold
the patch of blue moved o’er
a l’il to the left
as the sun sets
tiny snowflakes fall
and then…
the sky changes yet again
diagonal clouds
pink creeps in
a colorful cloud dance
in the sky
what began
as a tiny patch of blue
expands across the sky
lavender at the horizon
rosy clouds drift by
it’s quite a sight
the wind blows stronger
my hands grow colder
as evening
gets a l’il darker
the sky show is over
time to go inside

Blue and I saw the sunrise begin along the horizon. It was orange and gold then, as we circled ‘round the block and headed toward the park for the first time in weeks, due to cold and snow packed sidewalks. We both were missing our longer route. A few days ago he tugged that way, but I said, “No” and we took the shorter route to home. Today we ventured further once again. I was feeling ready and the dog was more than eager. “Let me at ‘em,” he said, with his nose down tracking. As we rounded the corner to the wide park path the glaze of ice was evident. Drat. Plan B was better. We walked in the grass. Diagonal even. A shortcut, “As the crow flies,” to quote an old expression. Blue looked at me with eyes that said, “Really?! You sure about this?! Fine by me, just checking.” That dog. I love him. Amber eyes that say so much. He didn’t woof, just trotted and stopped until I tugged. We made it home. Told boys, “Time to get up.” No one did immediately. Eventually they did. Before then though, a rose colored light caught my attention through the kitchen window. Oh. I opened the sliding glass door to the back deck. This. Pink clouds galore. Rose colored light. The essence of living life focusing on the Bright Side. Rose colored glasses. Except it was the whole sky casting rose light everywhere it touched. What a glorious way to begin a day. Today. I stood on the deck alone for just mere moments. Blue watched from the other side of the door, but greeted me as I walked back in to home. Good morning. I woke up hungry before 4am, but stayed in bed awhile longer. Morning whirl of dog walked, boys to school, now I can stop and breathe a second. Much better. Breakfast for me is next. Today is here. Embrace it.

It’s time to recycle the painted and yellowing newspaper that has been atop my art table for over half a year. The date in the upper corner reads, “December 29, 2012.” Sounds just right, since I painted a really blue, blue sky, on New Year’s Eve, as 2012 became 2013. Then on New Year’s Day I glued the landscape collage titled, “orange, yellow and blue.” I’ve made several pieces of art this year so far. “Hooray! Make more art!” I say. The next landscape background that I paint, will be atop a current newspaper. I’m thankful for my wonderful neighbors who will gladly set me up with yesterday’s news to make art upon. ~ Janean

tonight

tonight
the moon is full
with a pale orange tint
the nighttime air is cooler
less thick
without humidity
to be expected
on a midwestern day
in July

tonight
the breeze blows gently
yet persistently
I wish
for a screened in porch
a sleepin’ porch
like summers growin’ up
at Grandma and Grandpa’s

tonight
I see a flash a light
hear the leaves rustle
and feel a storm
gathering power
we need the rain
but it’s more than that
for a storm’s been brewing
and it’s time
to let it all go
tonight
