burrowed in

I am “a winter person.” I am. I love the coziness of winter. Bundled up clothes. Sweatshirts and sweaters. Fuzzy socks. Fleece blankets. Soup and hot drinks. I don’t mind shoveling snow either and have done LOTS of that THIS winter! Granted, I am also appreciative when my snowblower owning neighbors help me out with those extra big drifts. Blue is a snow dog. He and I have had a lot of fun making side by side tracks in fresh snow and climbing through drifts. Ice is another matter. I don’t mess around with ice, like the wintry mix hitting my windows now with a rat a tat tat. Burrowed in suits me just fine, as does winter. However, I am saying so quietly, just a whisper. When spring comes I will delight in the green and sigh at the daffodils. Summertime’s hot makes me wilt a bit, but I love the length of the days. Then the colors of fall foliage and a briskness in the air. Each season has beauty. Winter is for hibernating, resting, burrowing. Suits me. Especially this year. Honestly, my favorite season is whatever season I am in.

swoony moony ooey gooey love stuff

the moon is full tonight
feels right
planned special
for the hopeless romantics
who swoon
and go all dreamy
in the glow of moonbeams
shining a little brighter
for a little longer
on Valentine’s night
add some snowy sparkle
and twinkling stars
for outdoor ambiance
then fall
into each other’s arms
or in love
for forever
under the irresistible tug
of the full moon
call it fate, serendipity
or meant to be
just love
while you can
time is short
a blink

fairy tale light
as the sun rose
this morning
over the sidewalk
woman shoveling
dog chewing
on thorny stalks
the Peace rose
now dormant
long ago planted
by the front door
serene woman
wild and crazy dog
they snow play
after the work
she throws the ball
for him to chase
children sleeping in
it is Saturday
thankful for home
for Heaven above
the woman and dog
were there
under the sky
as the crescent moon
tucked into bed
and the sun rose
washing the earth
in fairy tale light

z time

I can hear the wind now
I’m tucked in
Blue is in his fleece bed
I have soothing instrumentals on Pandora for zzz’ing
Boys in their rooms
Maybe still reading
The phone rang a bit ago
“No school tomorrow”
Fist pump from the youngest
It was his school that was calling
Phone just buzzed “email”
No school for either son
Due to severe windchill
and single digit temps
Begun before ten
Then a l’il doze
Now it’s after
Z time here
‘Night
Zzzzzzzz

reality

don’t mind me
one more skyscape
from this morning
because I can’t help myself
even though
my stomach is growling
the sky keeps changing
golden glow
just now receding
to reveal
bright blue sky
with puffy white clouds
today I think
is for painting
all is well

P.S. Blue stopped getting up at the sound of the sliding door unlocking. Dog realized he’s staying inside right now so he went back to zzzz’ing on the love seat. Me?! I’m still doorjamb leaning. Children still sleeping. They need it. They were wound up, laughing, rambunctious Wild Things last night, and we all loved it! Sleep is much needed. So is quiet time, spent watching the rising sun. Today is good. Typed while those white puffy clouds drift off into the distance leaving me with a humongous patch of bright blue sky straight ahead. Soul Balm. All of it. Peaceful and calm. “Island Mellow,” I call it. Much better.

7:43am on Sunday morning

quiet stillness

in the quiet stillness
of a moonlit
morning walk
there was
a woman smiling
alongside her dog
the moon just full
now waning
lighting up the sky
translucent clouds
crowd alongside
without obscuring
la lune’s glowing
yesterday’s snowfall
blankets the ground
glistening
sparkling
moonlight reflecting
temperatures shivering
she is bundled up
walking in booted feet
only her eyes showing
behind her scarf smiling
woman’s heart pondering
dog’s nose to the ground
as they walk
in the quiet stillness
of a moonlit morn

January 19, 2014
Blue and I just went around the block
about twenty minutes altogether
6:00-6:20am
per usual I didn’t check the temperature before we stepped outside
I just peeked now…
13*F, feels like -4*F
or like I usually say, “It’s a little cold.”
I’m half dressed and half in pajamas
breakfast is next for me
Blue is couch zzzz’ing
my children are bed zzzz’ing
thankfully

The Reality

I wrote that, “I’m logging off Facebook and going to my art table” caption an hour ago. I know because Facebook helpfully keeps track of that stuff. I went back to the Facebook post to get the caption quote right. WTH?! I can’t help it. It’s how I’m made. Accuracy matters, even if the task is whimsical like a red dragon post at Tumblr. While there, I admitted it, posting in comments, “I suck at this. I wrote emails and just blogged at Tumblr about this kickass red dragon post instead of losing my damn phone and walking to my art table. Now I need lunch first, then the dog will need to go out again. Just admitting it.” Honest. There it is. I can own that too.

12:42pm lunch time

“Logging off Facebook and walking to my art table now. It’s that badass kickass red dragon that did it. I’ve made red dragon art and black dragon art. Dragons are part of my imagery. Thank you. It was the picture, more than the words that got my attention and said, ‘THIS MEANS YOU!’”

Above is the comment I wrote in the thread underneath this dragon photo on Facebook. Of course, I didn’t do it IMMEDIATELY. Now lunch is next. Good thing is that Blue is snoozing. Tired dog today. Smiling at him conked out, dreaming peacefully. I swear, my dog sleeps like a cat!

The caption under the dragon photo, written by Sarah Prineas, read, “Jump-In January Dragon Week Day Four (16th)
Today’s Dragon: Getting serious…” There was more to her encouraging post. She made her Facebook page a place Creatives could gather, name their goals aloud and keep themselves accountable to follow through. Cool.

Today I delivered six pieces of my artwork for a three month show (and hope for a possible sale). While it is the first time these six pieces are being shown together, or in this venue, they are a few years “old.” All six were made in 2012. Three in July and three in September. It is now 2014 and time to make new, but first I have some begun and abandoned pieces of art to return to and complete. It is time. Today. Right after lunch.

Facing dragons one by one. You have to face them before you can slay them. I am a Dragon Slayer. It says so on my handmade business cards in invisible ink. I know it’s there. I can own it. I do.

crazy nest
I took another picture
on walk four of the day
though I usually don’t count them
I wan’t going to take another picture
of this fallen nest
still on the sidewalk
as I circled the short block
with my dog, Blue
but after taking two photos prior,
What’s one more?!
I felt compelled to document it
tugged the dog’s leash
we doubled back
the sun is brighter now
I couldn’t see the preview
took the picture anyway
managed to keep my shadow away
honestly, this sort of sums it up
it has been a crazy nest kind of day
rose light in the sunrise
snow flurries flying wildly
sunshine
blue sky and white fluffy clouds now
just right, perfect, meant to be
on this day, still unfolding
a crazy nest day
I wonder where the bird is perching?
