Kings, Queens, Cats and Monkeys

Last night the littlest boy fell asleep in the biggest bed. The one worthy of a king. His parents let him sleep. They’d had enough of elbows in the nose at night from that (not so) little monkey in the middle. In a new move they tiptoed down the hall to his room and tucked into their old bed. The one sized for a queen. The two of them slept soundly there beneath a camouflage comforter, well guarded by a tank stuck upon the wall. That cat curled up down by their feet and settled in for the night. She didn’t ask any questions, quite used to the musical beds game and nighttime wanderings at her house. Everyone slept soundly without bad dreams or waking up too early. The littlest boy is still sleeping. His parents have already been up for hours, thankful for a good night’s sleep all around.

August 26, 2012

morning…sort of

I woke up at 3:00. Got up at 3:30. Walked Blue under a starlight sky. Streetlights dimly glow. May tuck back in, or rest on the couch for a bit, now that it’s 4:30a.m. Just couldn’t sleep anymore. Seems too soon to make the coffee. Even Blue plopped for some extra shut eye. Smart dog. My turn now too. ~ Janean

August 25, 2012

I find it fascinating that the sky can be bright blue with puffy clouds behind me, and pale blue with wisps of clouds, including some gray ones ahead. I’m facing East toward the sunrise. My sweet pup was up at 4:30 a.m. I wanted the rest if my family to sleep a little longer. We’ve been enjoying a variety of birdsong in the backyard. It’s 6:00 a.m. now. Blue’s had his breakfast. I’m ready for mine. Coffee is a necessity today. May 25, 2012 is the first day of Summer Vacation, my niece’s second birthday and one year to the day since my husband’s diagnosis. The day life changed. ~ Janean

under the maple tree
the biggest tree in my backyard
sittin’ here on a Sunday mornin’
just me and my big Blue dog
we’ve been up since five
goin’ in and out of the house
and ‘round the block
on a pajama clad walk
coffee’s long gone
tryin’ to kept him quiet
while the rest of my family sleeps
even that cat
so here I sit
under the maple tree
in a quiet backyard
except for bird sound
and an occasional woof
shhhhh
people are sleeping
their windows are open
yet here we sit
two awake beings
under the maple tree
on a Sunday morn
time to go in
again

dogs
cats
sleep
who needs it?
this is what
my animals think
last night at least
feline yowled
from bathroom
canine woofed
before 4 a.m.
I passed my youngest son
in the hallway
at 3-something
and said
you can have my spot
in bed
he said why?
I replied
couch
resting now
dog’s been out
twice
and fed
I’ll be napping later
or grrrrrrring
sleep
who needs it?
yeowwwww
woof
what time is it?
you don’t want to know

it was a Zebra Socks kind of day here
kind of wild at times, though not exotic
I was thankful for their warmth
in the melting snow drizzle
their whimsy made me grin
as I moved about the house
in my zebra stockinged feet
and remembered
the zebra skin
yes, from A Real Zebra
that hung on the wall
next to my bed
during my teen years
brought home from Africa
during my aunt’s Peace Corps years
all that, from a pair of socks
fashioned from black and white fibers
I’m sleepin’ in them too
it’s time for Zebra Dreams
goodnight

sleep

I slept four hours

hard

thanks to Sandman

and the cat

they both cuddled me

fast asleep

sometime before ten

now it’s the wee hours

of the night

full dark outside

I can hear the clock tick

and the chimes chime

my child’s cough

from up the stairs

I’ll tuck back in

before the sun rises

or midday

for a nap

home feels good

after four nights

in the hospital

we’re together

again

sleepin’ under

the same roof

as it should be
