my heart socks from yesterday
are on inside out this morning
sometimes life feels like that
when your heart is closer to the surface
and everything hurts a little more
because you’re feeling
turned inside out too
I hate feeling like that
but on the flip side
that’s where the poetry comes from
for we experience the world differently
than those turned right side out
and feel compelled
to put those feelings into words

so much more

Love is so much more
than Valentine’s flowers
chocolate too
maybe even dinner

Love is for everyday
not just one red heart day
shown in many different ways
if you’re lucky
and take the time
to notice

Love is a precious gift
given freely
with no strings attached
or hoops to jump through
to receive it

Love is life
for life is richer
with love in it

a Mississippi morning dawns

with a whisper of sounds

from the river road

a crowing rooster

and the warm colors

of the sunrise

from deep orange

to a whisper of pink

still showing

along the horizon

I stand in the old pasture

rolling terrain

reaching from atop the bluff

to the mighty river below

how I love this very spot

and the people who reside

on this rocky hill

and the glow

of the January sun

on my face

as I visit my grandfather

and parents

my cousins too

at Evergreen Heights

in southern Illinois

my heart home

would have been

today would have been
my grandmother’s 96th birthday
she died on May 1, 2006
each year since her passing
I think of her on her birthday
January 4 shall always be
her birth day
she was a fascinating woman
a marvelous grandmother
an adventurer at heart
brave in big ways
and small ones
with hazel eyes
that twinkled when she grinned
and narrowed in inquisition
often a playful wink
I miss her
still
I love you, Grandma
I am thankful for
the many lessons
taught and learned
that I carry with me
your voice is still in my head
and my heart
today I’ll bake a cake for you
in the heart shaped cake pans
you gave me
long ago
and I’ll think about you
on what would have been
your 96th birthday
enjoy the celebration
from Heaven

Evanescence

aclarityofconscious:

Evanescence is a gradual thing,
Nearly imperceptible to the human eye.

Small pieces simply blend into the background clutter,
Blurring what were distinct lines.

Subtly the erosion continues,
Widening the gulf between the present and the absent.

A larger world, hardly noticing or caring
Of what is being lost, continues on without skipping a beat.

And eventually the foreground and background
Blend seamlessly around what once was there,

But now is…
Nothing

I read this poem last night.

When I stalked your page, the way you stake out mine.

You taught me a new word in the process, Mr. Scrabble.

And made my heart hurt.

I hate that you feel this way.

I can read between the lines.

Is it because I put together the Star Wars thing?

And that is usually your job?

I just knew you were tired.

From working all day.

From giving blood before chemo again.

From Making An Appearance.

I was trying to help.

I made it worse.

Par for the course it seems.

You are here.

You are with us.

We are so thankful for that.

Every day you’re here.

Cancer can’t have you.

You are going to beat it.

We’re going for the cure.

You are going to beat it.

(Because it bears repeating.)

I love you damn it.

SO BIG!

Sorry I am a mess at showing you…

even after all the years we’ve been together.

You’d think we’d have it down by now.

Today is a new day.

Screw evanescence.

It’s for steam and fog.

Not people.

You are here.

Very much with us.

And we are thankful.

1. (noun) evanescence: the event of fading and gradually vanishing from sight; “the evanescence of the morning mist”
