onward

A winter storm is forecast for today. The sky is keeping us guessing with dark, gray clouds hanging low on the right side of the highway, and blue sky peeking through a bit on the left. Hoping blue sky wins (always), but that wind is blowing something fierce. Time will tell. For the moment, moving onward, heading North.

I’ve been wearin’ my cowgirl boots everywhere, except to sleep in, for several months now. I slide ‘em on with my pajamas in the early morning to walk the dog, sometimes barefoot, if thick socks aren’t at the ready. Today I had a doctor’s appointment…just an annual check up…the girl kind. Couldn’t help but smile, as I sat waitin’, all gowned up, and caught a glimpse of my discarded street clothes with boots at the ready, for when it was time to go. Home now. Glad that’s over for another year. It’s now mid-afternoon and time to walk the dog again. Boots on the sidewalk. Paws too. Haulin’ ass and tail. ~ Janean

December 10, 2012

I sat down poolside with coffee only, just as a hint of drizzle turned to gentle rain at 6:20a.m. Thankful for that big red umbrella and time spent sitting in the dark outside. (It was quiet until that lady sat down with her cell phone…that she’s actually talking on and not typing on like me.)
Since then I’ve moved tables. Tweeted. E-mailed. Facebooked. Have refilled my mug o’ coffee too.
Nearly moved again after loud talking cell phone user number two. Instead I couldn’t help but overhear as she said, “You can’t run away from yourself because you can’t get away from your own ass.” Well, tis true.
The sky has brightened. I should go and check on my family, and find out if they are waking up anytime soon. No hurry. That’s the beauty of vacation. The gray clouds are moving. Blue sky is tryin’ to peek through. Not sure where the day is going to take us. The To Do List just reads, “Have Fun.” Gotta love Vacation Days. Reality can wait a few days more. It’s 8:09a.m. now. Livin’ on Eastern time rather agrees with me.

it’s a day for words

I woke up with words in my head.
Not just one or two.
More than a few.
That now one year old pup obliged a bit, when he closed his eyes for awhile longer…
But it wasn’t enough time.
As my brain was wakin’ up and the words were kickin’ so was the rest of the household.
ACK!
NO!
The muse is fleeting.
The time is now!
Will try to catch the tail of it and hang on to the thought before it goes fleeting by.
But the clock is ticking.
Time is flyin’.
And soon I will be too.
Out the door, drivin’ from here to there, over yonder and back again, while a ticker tape of words, stories, poems and snippets of thoughts parade through my head.
I am not A Crazy Person.
And really, so what if I am?!
I am a writer.
A writer damn it.
And words are what I know.

Dear Queen Anne,
I love your lace.
I always have.
Since childhood.
When I’d tuck a stem behind my ear and the delicate blooms would tickle my face.
I picked a dozen and wove the long stems into a crown, oblivious to the minute white petals in my hair long after the crown was gone.
I chose the prettiest blooms and presented them to my grandma in a great big bunch.
Flowers, flowers everywhere in her multilayered gardens, but the only one I was allowed to pick was your lace, Queen Anne.

Time passes.
That young girl, once so carefree, grew into a woman with a family of her own.
But I’m still me.
In the light of early morning, walking my sweet pup on a new path, I spied a familiar flower.
For I never could call it a weed, with a name as lovely as, “Queen Anne’s Lace.”
Hello my friend.
Thank you for waking up my memories, of those childhood days long gone.
My grandma is gone now too.
Smiling down from heaven as I snapped off a single bloom and kept on walking.
Heading home.
Puppy slowing down, pulling less, heeling more.
I know full well it’s against the rules to pick flowers in a public park, as they are there for everyone to enjoy.
I rationalized no one would miss one weed…
Even though in my heart I didn’t think it so.
Thank you for the beautiful, pure white, intricate blooms of your lace, Queen Anne.
I’ll be walking that way again and a flower may or may not follow me home again…
(Depending a bit on who is reading.)
Love,
Janean

Spring is moving along at warp speed.
Everything is blooming ASAP!
These Bradford Pear trees usually bloom mid-April.
Yet, here they are, mid-March!
I can’t quite believe it.
I’m loving the balmy temperatures.
It’s been in the 70’s and low 80’s with no humidity.
What’s not to like?!
No need for a jacket or heavier cold weather gear.
I’ve even ditched shoes and socks for sandals and bare feet.
Most shocking is my choice of attire…
Hopefully I didn’t scare too many neighbors while sporting shorts and a tank top on Sunday afternoon.
In my defense, it was hot.
Yes, Spring is moving along at warp speed.
Summer will be here before we know it.
Perhaps in May, instead of June.
Time will tell.
However, there really isn’t any need to rush.

December 21, 2011

Today is the last day of school for my children before Christmas Break begins.

That means there are 6,000 things to think of and try to do before they are home and out of school before Christmas.

Life has been a whirlwind lately, of this, that, and the other, and how I wish I had one more day before their school break.

As it is, I am helping set up the food in 6th grade at 11:40.

My oldest son volunteered us to bring fudge, which my husband and I made together last night before bed.

At 1:00 I am helping in 3rd grade, having prepped an animal snowflake craft for 27 students a few nights ago.

In between now (8:50 a.m.) and 11:40 when I am due at school I am going to eat breakfast, get cleaned up, go to Target, the bank, the grocery store, make one or two more stops and then come home before leaving for school between 11:00 and 11:15.

I will be so ready to be HOME at 3:00 when the school day is done.

My oldest son has a shopping date with his grandparents.

Then church tonight.

I have no idea what’s for supper.

I ruined supper last night, literally pouring it down the drain on accident.

The colander lid wasn’t locked onto the saucepan and all the spaghetti noodles slid from the pan into the sink and down the garbage disposal too fast to grab any back and serve ‘em.

So, instead of spaghetti for supper, my youngest son had a plate of reheated pancakes, my oldest son had two hot dogs and a slice of garlic bread, my husband had an apple turnover and glass of milk and I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and cheez-its.

*sigh*

I am thankful for food to eat and Plan B, that saved the day, once again.

This is why I haven’t been tumblin’ much.

Life is busy, in a good way, and I haven’t had time to daydream, the source of poetry.

At least mine.

I need time to gaze at sunrises and sunsets.

Time to listen to the clock tick with nothing pressing that needs to be done NOW!

Those quiet moments in the days ahead aren’t likely, but I’ll do the best I can to find them and savor them when they happen.

There is lots of Energetic Christmas Is Coming Boy Commotion in my future.

Lookin’ forward to it.

Merry Christmas to you…just in case I’m not back before December 25, 2011.

Love,

Janean

Today is a mystery

Today is a mystery

sort of wide open

with things that need done

not sure I want to do any of them

so I will do some

one appointment I won’t miss

and no, it’s not the dentist

I hope it’s filled

with family and friends

with laughter,

smiles, hugs and grins

the tears need to stay at bay

I don’t have time

for you today

so far

so good
