“Happy Day Before Easter!”
it’s the kind of thing my mom always says
I’m the mom now
twas a magnificent sunrise
with red clouds
atop a golden glow
three dozen eggs are boiling
and the youngest boy age eight
is awake and asking, “When?”
“When are we going to dye eggs?”
soon
they are boiling now
and we wouldn’t start
without your brother
busy day
this Saturday
soccer game one at 11:30
soccer game two at 1:30
family meal at my in-laws at 4:00
Easter pageant (night two) at 7:00
a vet trip is pending
my sweet Blue pup had surgery on Wednesday
for, well, you know
and a hernia repair too
he’s pathetic and lethargic
and I’m a worried dog mom
we’re going to laugh, love, smile and cry
hopefully happy tears
perhaps growl a bit too
(and I’m not talkin’ about Blue)
for these are the things families do
indeed it is a
Happy Day Before Easter

…and I just bet
that my mom
will still wish me one
before the day is through

the beauty of outside
is the walls hold in
the sound of the TV
and once the dog
stopped woofing
I could hear the quiet
of the night
no stars shine
a bit overcast
50% chance of rain
isn’t there always?
it either will
or it won’t
simple as that
regardless
this is the view
looking up
if you stretch out flat
atop the wooden deck
while the woofing dog
doesn’t ask questions
just lies down beside me
then shhhhhh’s too
I love being outside
even in the dark
of night

it was a be-a-u-ti-ful day today
amazingly so
we can’t quite believe the unseasonably warm,
lack of bone chilling wind,
sunshine not rain,
daffodil bloom filled days
it is only mid March
and it feels like May
amazing, remarkable, wonderful
and I’m sure not complaining
I spent the afternoon outdoors
visiting with a friend
she is also my husband’s sister
bonus
the dogs were there too
hers and mine
they ran free
no leashes needed at the farm
we lay in the grass
sat up some too
walked when needed
sometimes in sun
sometimes in shade
always under the blue sky above
with white puffy clouds
the happy kind
and air warm enough
we were just in shirt sleeves
everyone is going to sleep well tonight
yes, it was a be-a-u-ti-ful day

I find myself backyard sitting
as the sun comes up
happily in my pajamas
stick chewing dog
at my feet
we were also out at 5:00a.m.
when the sky was still full dark
and the crescent moon
smiled a crooked grin
the birds are serenading us
singing the song of spring
while the daffodils bloom
swaying to the birdsong
and the gentlest of breeze
mmmmmmm, Saturday
so glad you’re here

sing your song
with a tweet, tweet, tweet
and may it be
sweet, sweet, sweet
pleasing to the eyes and ears
as you share your heart
without any fears

sing your song
like the peaceful dove
coo, coo, coo
trilling from a perch above

sing your song
like the robin true
chirp, chirp, chirp
a sign of spring anew

sing like a cardinal male
so bold and strong
with a lighthearted lilt
to your song

try not to be a crow
CAW, CAW, CAW
from the treetops
about all YOU know

sing your song
like the smallest sparrow
peep, peep, peep
perched on wire narrow

sing your song
alongside birds of a feather
as you find one another
and sing together

My paternal grandmother was an avid bird watcher. My grandfather her ever faithful chauffeur. She kept her eyes peeled for first time sightings as she traveled the world. She also savored the visits from feathered friends to the feeders she kept filled at home. I notice the birds and their songs more, now that I’m spending so much time outdoors with the puppy. I’m thankful for that time spent under the sky above. It’s thinking time. Pondering time. Drink in the world time. Puppy playtime too. Recently there were five robins a bit surprised when Blue barreled around the corner, into his yard, and woofed them over to the neighbors.

woof

I have a dog named Blue.
He’s named for his black fur that looks blue like a raven in the sunlight.
As an artist, I think of the primary color.
Secretly, I think he does too.
He’s a romantic, this dog.
Moonlit walks.
Starry nights.
Sunrise serenades.
How I love him.
This morning I heard, “Woof”, and joined him at the sliding doors to head outside.
Again.
This time though, instead of the lingering dark of night, the sky was awash in shades of lavender and hot pink, blended just so.
Oh, such wonderful colors.
Faded to steely winter sky color now.
But for moment, I stood in the brisk February morning, and savored the sunrise.
Thanks to my dog named Blue.
Woof

Sunrise over the backyard at 6:50am.
On a Saturday.
Been up since 5:00.
I am A Dog Mom now.
He woofed.
My feet hit the floor to let him out.
You know.
To go.
Stayed up.
Might as well.
Morning is here.
Loving the coffee.
And the Puppy & Me time.
He’s A Good Dog.
My Blue.
Just as well I didn’t know
That it was only ten degrees
Until AFTER our 20 minute morning walk
He’s ready for a nap now
Smart Boy that he is
Of course it’s as my other boys are waking up
The two smaller ones
And the big one
The sun is rising higher
The sky is brighter
Saturday has Officially Begun
