window view

playing in the snow
children laughing
snowballs flying
smiles shining too
looks normal
from the outside
only the inside knows
the truth
for reality
is anything but normal
life is never boring
if it is
it’s your own damn fault
we have your drama
real life kind
eyebrow raising
jaw dropping
gray hair causing too
but from the outside
if you are looking
from your window view
the drama doesn’t show
it’s skillfully hidden
behind brave faces
and eyes filled with secrets
heart kind
that never tell

I’m wool gathering in the kitchen
warming my hands
on a ginormous mug o’joe
leaning on the counter
dishwasher sloshing
running humming
boys watching Clone Wars
now nearly through
snow covers the ground
February air has snap
inside is warm
my kitchen spot the best
for quiet contemplation
coffee drinkin’ daydreams
blue sky is emerging
from behind a wall o’clouds
wool gathering
thinking
not just a barnyard pursuit
baa
brrrr
ya sheared me a l’il close
not yet anyway
shearing is for Spring
after winter wind abates
real wool gathering time isn’t here
not quite yet

February 23, 2013

I just shouted down the stairs to my youngest son, “It’s snowing!” He ran upstairs, from the basement depths, and promptly spread the word, by shouting the same to his big brother. My mom is probably doin’ some happy snow shoutin’ and smilin’ of her own, for a love of snow runs in the family. Blue dog loves snow too. Woof.

December 31, 2012

it was a Zebra Socks kind of day here
kind of wild at times, though not exotic
I was thankful for their warmth
in the melting snow drizzle
their whimsy made me grin
as I moved about the house
in my zebra stockinged feet
and remembered
the zebra skin
yes, from A Real Zebra
that hung on the wall
next to my bed
during my teen years
brought home from Africa
during my aunt’s Peace Corps years
all that, from a pair of socks
fashioned from black and white fibers
I’m sleepin’ in them too
it’s time for Zebra Dreams
goodnight

if it wasn’t for that puppy

if it wasn’t for that puppy
I wouldn’t have been outside tonight
to see the glint of the moonlit snow
and Orion’s Belt against a full black sky

if it wasn’t for that puppy
I wouldn’t know the quiet stillness
of a winter’s morning
occasionally broken by a crow’s caw

if it wasn’t for that puppy
I wouldn’t have met Jasper, Captain Morgan or Taz
the other dogs in the neighborhood
and their owners too

if it wasn’t for that puppy
I wouldn’t have laughed aloud
before the sun rose
as I watched him explore snow

if it wasn’t for that puppy
I wouldn’t have known
how easily I could tumble into love
with a big eared, brown eyed boy
(still talkin’ about the dog, of course)

child of whimsy

baby mine

I love you so

my daughter

mine to raise

alone

just you and me

out in the world

we’ll dance in the rain

splash in puddles

and jump in leaf piles

in the fall

we’ll throw snowballs

make snowmen

and swing so high

on the swings

in the park

we’ll pick bouquets

in Grandma’s garden

chase butterflies

by day

and fireflies

by night

laying in a hammock

we’ll watch the clouds

move across

the summer sky

we’ll laugh

skip

and fill one another up

with joy

I’m smiling as I write

this poem for you

my daughter

about to be born

due one month from today

these promises

I make to you

we will go adventuring

I will be there

always

loving you

my firstborn

child of whimsy,

romance, laughter and love

Ella Bella will you be

now and forevermore
