my sweet husband surprised me with flowers today
for no reason other than, “We haven’t had any flowers for awhile.”
our oldest son helped pick them out
making them even more special
they are in water now
dressing up the edge of the kitchen sink
which is empty of dirty dishes I’ll have you know
it’s been a nice day here
a good day
a family day
filled with a whole lot of normal
we needed that
this was a no chemo week
the calm before the storm
of nausea,
weakness,
fatigue,
and cold sensitivity
hardest on the flower buying man who endures it
not easy for the rest of us either
we hurt when he hurts
we want to make it better
we all just have to go through it though
to get to the other side
the side with no more cancer
for that is the hope
to get it all
for the cancer to never return
for him to be cured
that day will come
I am sure of it
until then we’re living and loving
one day at a time
and today is extra special
because he bought me flowers
and yes, I’m still smiling

sometimes the happy shows

there are days you awake

with a sense of anticipation

today is one of those days

for me

my friends are coming over to play

we’re calling it A Planning Meeting

but under that Official Sounding Moniker

it’s a play date

for the women we are

artists and writers too

we’re having lunch

the four of us

fancy chicken salad and a veggie tray

with cookies and cake for dessert

maybe a walk afterwards

with the warmth of the sun

on a rare and wonderful 52˚ January day

rare for the Midwest anyway

my husband is teasing me

calling it a Cackle Party

he’s going out for lunch

instead of coming home

in the middle of his work day

after the daily drop off at 8:20 a.m.

to take my boys to school

I did some errands

just a few

I am home, by 10:00 a.m.

waiting for my friends

I smiled a serene smile

all through the grocery store

must of looked like

I was up to something

well, sometimes the happy shows

and oh, it feels so good

to be happy and hopeful

hello, 2012

so glad you’re here

it’s only day five

and I sort of love you

still grinning in anticipation here

watching the clock

’cause my friends are comin’ over

soon

it is a crazy daisy kind of day
oldest son feverish and flu-ish
husband getting unhooked from 48 hours of chemo around noon
getting groceries in the six o’clock hour
that’s a.m.
I smile as I spy them in the bin
as I round the corner toward produce
the bin where all the half price bouquets go to wait
for the right shopper
the one who stops and takes a look
taking time to admire the varied assortment of grocery store flowers
oodles of crazy daisies
figuring it is $3.49 well spent
they are the first thing I put in my cart
even though they are never on the list
I head home by seven
as the sky begins to brighten
they are arranged in a vase on the kitchen counter
it is a clear vase, but they turn the water purple
I love that
coffee is done brewing
husband is out the door
time to get breakfast
not sure what is after that
sinking into home today
reading my new book from the library
making it up as we go along
yes, it is a crazy daisy kind of day here

concert day

my oldest son is playin’ violin

on campus today

meetin’ extended family there

listening to music played by children

in concert

from the newest musicians

to more experienced

they save the best for last

this is my sons third year

his first concert with Papa’s violin

from my father, to my son

passed hand to hand

skipping a generation

that boy has music

in his heart and soul

I catch him humming

and playing air violin

after practicing

lookin’ forward to a toe tappin’

heart swelling with love

kind of day

it’s concert day

It’s an Art Day

It’s another Art Day here. I can hardly wait! I’ve been invited to show my artwork at a shop in uptown Normal next Wednesday, and I said, “Yes”, even without a stack of completed art, ready and waiting to go on display, at a moments notice. (About a week’s notice in this case.) Along with the “Yes”, I admitted that the ideas have been stacking up, but I hadn’t set aside the time and space to make the art. So, today is the day, and most likely tomorrow. I’m lookin’ forward to it, with a sparkle in my eye and a ready grin. Hooray! It’s An Art Day here!  ~ Janean

child of whimsy

baby mine

I love you so

my daughter

mine to raise

alone

just you and me

out in the world

we’ll dance in the rain

splash in puddles

and jump in leaf piles

in the fall

we’ll throw snowballs

make snowmen

and swing so high

on the swings

in the park

we’ll pick bouquets

in Grandma’s garden

chase butterflies

by day

and fireflies

by night

laying in a hammock

we’ll watch the clouds

move across

the summer sky

we’ll laugh

skip

and fill one another up

with joy

I’m smiling as I write

this poem for you

my daughter

about to be born

due one month from today

these promises

I make to you

we will go adventuring

I will be there

always

loving you

my firstborn

child of whimsy,

romance, laughter and love

Ella Bella will you be

now and forevermore

As I fall asleep at night

As I fall asleep at night

I think a million thoughts

the day just done

the day to come

and all the things To Do

As I fall asleep at night

my night light

keeps the dark at bay

my closet door is closed

to keep the monsters in

As I fall asleep at night

the ceiling fan rotates

round an round

a quiet whir that lulls

with a gentle breeze

As I fall asleep at night

the cat jumps on the bed

she settles in

with kneading loves

and purrs me to sleep

a reasonably good day

One of my bestest friends wrote to me this morning and said, “Take care of u…i hope u have a reasonably good day.”
This is my reply…
Dear Friend,
Yes, I plan to have a reasonably good day.
I am going to try to stay offline, reading what other people wrote, and do some serious writing myself.
For this NaNoWriMo thing I signed up for.
I sent my sister the memory I wrote, about the night she was born.
She enjoyed reading it and spoke nice words to me, about what I’d written.
I can’t handle criticism right now.
Instead of saying, “Thank you for your opinion, now shove it where the sun don’t shine”, I might just stop writing it.
And I don’t want that to happen.
I want to see it through.
I’ll have three square meals at au bon pain.
Or maybe round ones, since I’m all curves and bumps right now.
I am taking care of me.
Hot shower. check.
Big, cozy, turquoise shirt with hot pink underneath for Color In My Day. check.
Makeup (because I’m a girl). check.
Laptop for endless hours of entertainment in the hospital. check.
Books for when I’m sick of that. check.
Cell phone. check.
Hope you have A Reasonably Good Day too.
Or maybe even A Fantabulous One!
Love,
Janean
