Today is a mystery

Today is a mystery

sort of wide open

with things that need done

not sure I want to do any of them

so I will do some

one appointment I won’t miss

and no, it’s not the dentist

I hope it’s filled

with family and friends

with laughter,

smiles, hugs and grins

the tears need to stay at bay

I don’t have time

for you today

so far

so good

child of whimsy

baby mine

I love you so

my daughter

mine to raise

alone

just you and me

out in the world

we’ll dance in the rain

splash in puddles

and jump in leaf piles

in the fall

we’ll throw snowballs

make snowmen

and swing so high

on the swings

in the park

we’ll pick bouquets

in Grandma’s garden

chase butterflies

by day

and fireflies

by night

laying in a hammock

we’ll watch the clouds

move across

the summer sky

we’ll laugh

skip

and fill one another up

with joy

I’m smiling as I write

this poem for you

my daughter

about to be born

due one month from today

these promises

I make to you

we will go adventuring

I will be there

always

loving you

my firstborn

child of whimsy,

romance, laughter and love

Ella Bella will you be

now and forevermore

Christmas is comin’

as night falls

my heart hurts

I have a lump in my throat

and it was a good day

it was

I’m just having a hard time

with Christmas this year

and I love Christmas

the decorations

the music

the presents

the giving

more than getting

the fun of it

the joy

the laughter

this year I’m just not there yet

hope it kicks in soon

it’s not about Santa for me

it’s about the birth of Jesus

I’ll focus on that

and hope

for the peace of Him

to lift the burden

from my heart

bein’ girly

I am bein’ girly today

meetin’ a friend this morn

we’re going to gab,

chit chat and laugh

while our feet are soaked,

scrubbed and buffed

then our toes

polished in vivid hues

we’ll slip our flip flops on

talk a little more

hug goodbye

both of us feelin’ lighter

on the inside

after our time together

sharing hearts

over pedicures

two women

bein’ girly

my birthday present

a little early

from a wonderful friend

who insisted

on treatin’

Thank you, Kim!

I. Can’t. Wait.

Will see you soooooon!

Love,

Janean

on Thanksgiving Eve

the sounds of children playing

drift up through the floorboards

and travel up the basement stairs

the sound of the television drones on

one room over

I am sitting alone

as darkness falls

all around

listening

daydreaming

e-mailing

thinking

time to wash the floor

time to wash the turkey

time to cook the cranberries

time to cook the giblets

time to think about supper

for my family

tonight

I see the sun set

through the front window

from pale gold on the horizon

to the palest of rose

moving skyward

the houses and bare trees

stand out in silhouette

this is me

procrastinating

on Thanksgiving Eve
