son
on weirdness
my second son: “Mom! He called me weird!”
‘He’ being my first born son who is all of three years older.
me: “So what? We’re all weird. Weird is beautiful.”

reflections
today I found myself wondering
what was Poe like as a child
was he all moody, broody darkness
from an early age
or did he have an impish grin
and a way of laughing at his own joke
before saying the punch line aloud
what did his mother think
did she worry
did she fret
or did she love him a little more
and stand between him and the world
lookin’ for a fight
if anyone dared hurt her little boy
for it’s all right to be different
to not follow the crowd
but it’s not all right to tease and belittle
those who see the world through poet’s eyes
today I found myself wondering
about Edgar Allen Poe’s mother
on the edge
on the edge of emotion
tamping back tears all day
no reason for it
I consider giving in
and letting the tears fall
but I already did my makeup
so I shove ‘em down again
they might be happy tears
for my oldest son’s 12th birthday
or relieved tears
for my father’s safe travel
or exhausted tears
from two weeks
of my own health battle
or apprehensive
it’s a chemo week tears
for my husband
most likely it’s just regular
I’m a girl and cry sometimes tears
even though it makes me mad to feel this way
and I don’t want to be a cliche
there you have it
tamping back tears all day
on the edge of emotion
hopping right along
My third grade son said, “Good Morning, Bunny” when he saw me this morning.
On spying the Easter candy corn, jelly beans and m&ms in his Easter basket he said, “Sort of like a dessert mix.”
Both boys are chomping chocolate rabbits for breakfast.
One egg hunt coming right up.
Church too.
Happy Easter to YOU!

I am not a fan of April Fool’s Day, however I live in a house of tricksters and pranksters SO after a predictable, “You have something on your face” from my oldest son, I countered with, “The cinnamon rolls are gone.”
To which he replied, “WHAT?! Who ate them?”
Me: “April Fool’s!”
Gotcha.
Good luck out there.
The school teachers are probably glad it’s on a Sunday this year. Palm Sunday at that. One of my favorites. ~ Janean

sometimes I am My Mother’s Daughter
today is one of those days
It’s Valentine’s Day
all day
and I find myself wearing pink
and the heart covered socks
that my mother gave me
long ago
I wear ‘em once a year
on Valentine’s Day
might as well
and as long as I gave into pink
and socks with hearts
I put on lipstick too
yes, my mother would approve
my oldest son is wearing black today
I let him
I sorta wanted to wear black too
the rebel in me
even though it’s not showing
on the outside
it’s there
underneath the pink
