tonight

tonight
the moon is full
with a pale orange tint
the nighttime air is cooler
less thick
without humidity
to be expected
on a midwestern day
in July

tonight
the breeze blows gently
yet persistently
I wish
for a screened in porch
a sleepin’ porch
like summers growin’ up
at Grandma and Grandpa’s

tonight
I see a flash a light
hear the leaves rustle
and feel a storm
gathering power
we need the rain
but it’s more than that
for a storm’s been brewing
and it’s time
to let it all go
tonight

July 2, 2012

last night was for fireflies
the first ones of the year
this mornin’ is for pink clouds
and a crescent moon
still hangin’ in the sky
fireflies remind me
of my childhood summers
pink clouds are for my grandma
she painted some on canvas
and the teacher said,
“There is no such thing.”
Grandma wouldn’t budge
knew she was right
as she’d seen pink clouds
from atop the bluff
time and time again
so while I’m not a pink girl
I love pink cloud mornings
and greet them with a grin
as memories of my grandma
fill me up within

I find myself backyard sitting
as the sun comes up
happily in my pajamas
stick chewing dog
at my feet
we were also out at 5:00a.m.
when the sky was still full dark
and the crescent moon
smiled a crooked grin
the birds are serenading us
singing the song of spring
while the daffodils bloom
swaying to the birdsong
and the gentlest of breeze
mmmmmmm, Saturday
so glad you’re here

the weather report

wind whooshing
clouds hovering
darkness falling
the moon is full
yet hidden from view
no wonder I’m moody
sorta melancholy
a storm is brewing
for sure
better watch out
and take cover
before the rain falls
in torrential torrents
for the wind foretells
the power
about to be
unleashed
bring it on
rain soothes me
even by the bucketful
the rhythmic sound
the pelting moisture
anticipating
on the morrow
‘til then
‘night

I walked alone

I walked alone last night

along the festive streets

families migrated downtown

to see the live window vignettes

with a holiday theme

the crescent moon was shining

the streetlights were brighter

a white horse ambled by

pulling a carriage

something special

out of the usual

I wish my family had joined me

at the art walk downtown

where I went to see my friends

for quick conversations

shared smiles and hugs

and to see their art

glad I went

for a bit

as I drove home

alone

Elvis was crooning

“Blue Christmas”

from the radio

I got misty eyed

a lump in my throat

my head already hurt

maybe it ached

from unshed tears

accumulating

behind my eyes

I didn’t test that theory

and held ‘em back

a little longer

headin’ home

for rest

in the night

December 2, 2011 was F1RST FR1DAY in downtown Bloomington. How I love, and look forward to goin’ downtown on the F1RST FR1DAY of every month. Even if I go alone, I don’t feel lonely. The studios and galleries, and the artists within, are very welcoming and always glad to see you. Even if you’re just admiring, and not buying, their wonderful and varied works of art. ~ Janean
